2007 Institute Highlights
On February 20, 2007, 150 faculty, staff and students (this included campus teams of up to 10 individuals representing 22 campuses) attended the 2007 Institute on “Developing and Expanding International Service-Learning on Your Campus." Read highlights below.

Opening Session
The morning began with a welcome from Larry Basirico, Dean of International Programs at Elon University, followed by two Duke University students sharing their reflections on the transformative power of international service-learning.
Panel Discussion
Dr. Barbara Holland, Director of the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, moderated a panel of international service-learning experts discussing the vital components of effective international service-learning and the distinctions between international service-learning, study abroad and service-learning in a domestic setting.

Workshops
Following the panel discussion participants attended workshops highlighting successful program models. Topics ranged from "What is International Service-Learning and How is it Applied in Higher Education," to "Crossing Cultures: Linking Gloabl and Local Service-Learning Abroad." Plenary Session
After lunch, Dr. Humphrey Tonkin, University Professsor of the Humanities and President Emeritus of the University of Hartford, gave a plenary speech on "Evaluating and Assessing International Service-Learning."
Roundtable Discussions
Following the plenary attendees participated in roundtable discussions on the "nuts & bolts" of implementing international service-learning including topics such as "Addressing Safety in the Changing World: How to be Prepared for any Eventuality" to " Creating a Framework for Experiential Learning." Working Session for Teams
The day concluded with campus teams used a planning guide to further explore the questions and issues they need to address to develop or expand internatioanl service-learning on their campus.
