2008 Student Conference
November 8, 2008 - Hosted by High Point University
"The Power is Yours"

Highlights

The 2008 Student Conference at High Point University was a huge success with over 250 attendees representing 34 campuses! The Conference included a student awards ceremony, guest speakers, panel discussions, and student- led workshops. The day was a great way for student leaders from across the state to share their civic engagement efforts with like-minded individuals from other campuses.

The theme of the Conference was 'The Power is Yours," based on the Captain Planet environmental awareness cartoon series. In keeping with the theme, the 2008-2009 Student Advisory board worked with NC Campus Compact and High Point University to print all materials on post-consumer products and to provide lunch in biodegradable boxes.

Opening Ceremony

The conference began with a 2008-2009 Student Advisory Board skit inspired by Captain Planet.  Following the skit High Point University President, Dr. Nido Qubein, opened the conference with remarks inspiring each attendee to achieve personal success.  He also generously provided a copy of his book How to be a Great Communicator: In Person, on Paper, and on the Podium to each attendee.

 Invited Guest

After Dr. Qubein’s speech, this year’s invited guest, State Senator Vernon Malone, gave a light hearted speech honoring and thanking each student for their commitment to service.  He jokingly affirmed the decision by the participants to attend the conference over college football games.
