2009 Institute Highlights

On February 10, 2009, 150 faculty, staff, students and community partners attended the 2009 Institute on “Next Generation Success:  Retention and Civic Engagement." The 2009 Institute was designed to explore best practices and research regarding the retention and success of first generation and minority students. Each member President or Chancellor was asked to select a team leader for their campus. This leader convened and registered a team for their campus and hosted a pre-Institute meeting to prepare the team for their work on February 10.

The day began with a rousing plenary by Dr. James H. Johnson, the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of entrepreneurship and director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at UNC Chapel Hill. He spoke on the topic "People and Jobs on the Move:  Implications for U.S. Higher Education."

In two sets of workshops, one immediately following the Opening Plenary, and another later in the afternoon, participants attended two separate workshop sessions which highlighted programs and initiatives taking place on campuses throughout the state of North Carolina that focus on access, retention and success of first-generation and minority students. The afternoon Challenge session featured collaborative models, broader topics that impact access and success, as well as research findings.

Below is a photo slideshow of workshops.

Mr. Wayne Meisel, President of the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, gave a mid-morning plenary address on the topic "Civic Engagement at the Center" followed by a luncheon in which campus teams began processing and discussing what they were learning.

Student panel discussions followed the luncheon which involved first generation and minority college students sharing their stories. Throughout the day participants could view posters highlighting various access and access initiatives and early afternoon, there was an interactive poster session allowing participants to speak with poster presenters.

The day concluded with a closing plenary address by Ms. Robyn Hadley, Executive Director of "What's After High School?"
