Glossary of Terms
AmeriCorps - AmeriCorps is one stream of national service, funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, initiated in 1994 by President Clinton, and often referred to as the “domestic Peace Corps.” AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Campus Coordinator – A Campus Coordinator is the person at an NC-ACTS! member campus who oversees the program on a daily basis. They will assist members with enrollment and exit paperwork, provide an orientation to the program, collect time sheets and facilitate reflection. This is the person that a member of Site Supervisor should contact regarding questions or concerns related to the NC-ACTS! program requirements.
Direct Service - These are activities that directly impact the site or clients. 80% of a members hours must involve direct service activities. This is approximately 240 hours. A member may choose to complete all 300 hours in direct service.

Education Award – This is the $1000 award that an NC-ACTS! member receives at the completion of their term of service. This is NOT a cash award but funds held in an account that can be transferred to a school or lender as payment for educational purposes.
Member Campus – A member campus is one of the institutions of higher education in the state of North Carolina that is a member of NC Campus Compact. In order to enroll in NC-ACTS! a student must attend a member campus.
Training/Member Development - These are activities that assist the member in gaining skills and information necessary for them to better engage in their direct service activities. 20% of a members hours can include training. NC-ACTS! - (North Carolina – Activating Citizenship Through Service) is an AmeriCorps program that provides $1000 education awards to students who complete 300 hours of volunteer service during an academic school year.
NC Campus Compact – NC Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of higher education institutions that promotes civic engagement in order to unite campuses, empower students and impact communities. NC Campus Compact manages the NC-ACTS! program for our member campuses.
NC-ACTS! Member – This is a student who has completed the enrollment paperwork and other requirements to join the NC-ACTS! program.
Site Supervisor – A Site Supervisor is the person at the organization, agency or school where a member will complete their hours of service. They oversee the work that a member does at a site and sign the time sheets to verify that the member completes their hours. This is the person a member asks questions directly related to their service at the site.
Term of Service – This is the duration of time that a student is enrolled in the program and serving their 300 hours.
