AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Music auditions are required of all incoming students desiring to major in Music Education, Music Performance, or the B.A. in Music. In lieu of a performance audition, students seeking entrance into the Music Technology major may submit a portfolio of supporting materials such as composed scores, recordings of music they have written, produced, or engineered, etc. No audition is required to minor in music. Auditions for choral and instrumental ensembles are held during the first few days of each semester for students in attendance at Elon University. Incoming or prospective students are not auditioned for any music ensembles before arriving in the fall semester.

Vocal Auditions

Prepare two contrasting selections from standard classical vocal literature. These should be accompanied solos, not choral parts. The songs should be performed from memory. An accompanist will be provided upon request.

Instrumental Auditions

Prepare two contrasting pieces, one lyrical and one to demonstrate technical skill. You can also choose music from contrasting style periods. An accompanist will be provided upon request.

Music Technology Portfolio

Prospective Music Technology majors who are interested in composition and/or songwriting may bring a portfolio of scores/sheet music for 2-3 original musical works in lieu of a performance audition. If recordings are available, please include a compact disc. Music Technology majors may also audition for talent-based scholarships based on the criteria outlined in the Vocal Auditions and Instrumental Auditions sections above.

The following audition dates are for admission into the program as well as scholarship consideration for the 2010-2011 academic year.
