Copyright guidelines according to Fair Use must be met. (U.S. code on Fair Use)
Only a reasonable percentage of a work (e.g. a chapter from a book, a single article from a journal issue containing several articles, or excerpts from larger works) may be placed on course reserves.
Ten percent of a work is generally accepted as within the guidelines of Fair Use.
If the library owns the book or the issue of the periodical from which the chapter or article was copied, limited exceptions to the policy may be made.
Photocopied materials may be placed on course reserves for one semester only. Written permission from the owner of the copyright must be obtained for subsequent use of the material. A copy of this copyright permission form must be kept on file in the library.
It is safe to assume the only materials exempt from copyright protection are those published by the U.S. Government.
Photocopies will be scanned and made available 24/7 through Blackboard’s eReserves system. (The only photocopies that will be available in the library will be ones that could not be scanned due to poor photocopy quality.) eReserves may be viewed and printed for the personal use of instructors and students enrolled in each course. Brief articles and book chapters are best for eReserves. Long documents increase download time and are more suitable for paper-only reserves. To place copies of articles and book chapters on eReserves, please note the following important information, and then fill out the Course Reserves form and submit it electronically. eReserves files will be listed by title in Blackboard. It is important that you list the title exactly as it appears on your course syllabus. When completing the Course Reserves form, you may provide a link to the file or the file itself. If neither is available, you will need to provide a paper photocopy of the article (must be hand-carried or delivered via campus mail to Library). If none of the above is provided, the Library will attempt to locate the materials; however, additional time will be required. If you are providing photocopies to be scanned and posted, note that the following criteria must be met: Paper no larger than 8 ½" x 14" No cut off or blurred text No punched holes No staples or loose photocopies The following criteria will ensure the best file and print performance: Clean ½ inch margin on all four sides No black margins and little spine shadowing No extraneous text Citation information is required on the first page of every article to be placed on eReserves, as follows: Citation references for book chapters: Author(s) and editor(s) Complete title Place of publication Name of publisher Date of publication Citation references for journal articles: Author Complete article title Complete name of journal Volume number Issue date
