Biographical Note

The only biographical information at this time about Rev. J.A. Ledbetter can be found in the obituary that Dr. J.O. Atkinson wrote. We have no information as to when Rev. Ledbetter was born or when he died. We know that he was a minister of many Christian Churches in the South, spending a lot of time in both North Carolina and Virginia during the 1860s, 1870s, and 1890s. He was also involved with mission work for the Christian Church. At one point in his life, he was a resident of Elon College, NC. At the time of his death, his family lived in Gibsonville, NC. He was married and had four children. For more information about the biography of Rev. J.A. Ledbetter, please refer to the printed material series, which includes his obituary (3:1).

Scope and Content Note

This very small collection contains handwritten sermons by Rev. J.A. Ledbetter during 1861-1894, primarily from the 1870s. One photocopy of a photograph of Rev. Ledbetter is included along with his obituary. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into three series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Literary Productions, Photographs, and Printed Material.

The literary productions series contains only hand written sermons by Rev. J.A. Ledbetter. The majority of them are from the 1870s, when he was more than likely most active in Christian Churches in the South (1:2, 1:3, 1:5-1:9). There is one sermon from 1861 (1:4) and one from 1894 (1:10).

The photograph and printed material series are the smallest in the collection, each containing only one item. The photograph series has one photocopy of an original photograph of Rev. J.A. Ledbetter. This is the only proof at this time we have that documents what Rev. Ledbetter looked like (2:1). Additionally, the printed material series contains the obituary of Rev. Ledbetter that was written by Dr. J.O. Atkinson. The date of when this obituary was written is unknown (3:1). This obituary represents the only biographical information we know about Rev. Ledbetter at this time (3:1).

The literary productions series is by far the largest in the collection. It contains only hand written sermons by Rev. J.A. Ledbetter. The majority of the sermons were written in the 1870s, but there is one from 1861 and one from 1894. What little information we know about the biographical history of Rev. Ledbetter, we do know that he was an active minister in Christian Churches both in North Carolina and Virginia. It is easy to deduce that many of these sermons were probably preached by him to the congregations of churches where he was acting minister (1:1-1:10).
