<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="520">This collection contains materials related to the schools in Graham, North Carolina dating from 1845-1981. The majority of the dates included are the 1850s and 1870s-1880s. The schools represented in the collection are Graham College, Graham High School, Graham Institute, Graham Female Seminary, and Graham Normal College. The types of materials in this collection include (but are not limited to) newspaper clippings, correspondences, reports, meeting minutes, and charter information. The collection is arranged chronologically, then alphabetically by the name of the institution located in Graham, North Carolina, and then alphabetically by type of material.</abstract>

<head>Historical Note</head>
<p>Currently, there is no comprehensive history written about the different schools and institutions located in Graham, North Carolina. However, the information in the timeline below was compiled from the book <title render="italic">Elon College: Its History and Traditions </title>by Durward T. Stokes, 1982. 
</p>
<p>
<list type="simple">
<item>1851. The Incorporation of Graham Institute announced. At the time, it was an all male school.</item>
<item>1859. North Carolina legislature chartered Graham College, dropping the "Institute" name. At the time, it was co-educational.</item>
<item>1863. Graham College was suspended due to the Civil War.</item>
<item>1865. William Samuel Long opened Graham Female Seminary, which took the place of the former Rebecca B. Kerr's Female Seminary in Graham, North Carolina.</item>
<item>1871. William Samuel Long purchased the Graham College property. After buildings were repaired and refurbished, he opened Graham High School.</item>
<item>1872. Graham High School opened.</item>
<item>1874. Daniel A. Long (brother of William Samuel Long) purchased the property from his brother, W.S. Long, and incorporated the school as Graham High School.</item>
<item>1881. The Long brothers obtained an amendment to the school's charter and changed the name to Graham Normal College.</item>
<item>1888. It was decided that Mill Point would be the area in North Carolina where a four year liberal arts school would be built. </item>
<item>March 11, 1889. Elon College chartered.</item>
<item>1892. Graham Normal College was destroyed by fire.</item>
