Historical Note

Currently, there is no comprehensive history written about the different schools and institutions located in Graham, North Carolina. However, the information in the timeline below was compiled from the book Elon College: Its History and Traditions by Durward T. Stokes, 1982.

1851. The Incorporation of Graham Institute announced. At the time, it was an all male school. 1859. North Carolina legislature chartered Graham College, dropping the "Institute" name. At the time, it was co-educational. 1863. Graham College was suspended due to the Civil War. 1865. William Samuel Long opened Graham Female Seminary, which took the place of the former Rebecca B. Kerr's Female Seminary in Graham, North Carolina. 1871. William Samuel Long purchased the Graham College property. After buildings were repaired and refurbished, he opened Graham High School. 1872. Graham High School opened. 1874. Daniel A. Long (brother of William Samuel Long) purchased the property from his brother, W.S. Long, and incorporated the school as Graham High School. 1881. The Long brothers obtained an amendment to the school's charter and changed the name to Graham Normal College. 1888. It was decided that Mill Point would be the area in North Carolina where a four year liberal arts school would be built. March 11, 1889. Elon College chartered. 1892. Graham Normal College was destroyed by fire.
