Tri-IT Spring 2009 -- Conference Materials

What is Web 2.0?
Randy Piland, Lecturer in Communications at Elon University, defined Web 2.0 and focused on the ease of use for teaching. Examples are on pilandonline.com/web2.html (in new window).
Blogging to Learn

Rick Palmer, Instructional Designer with Elon Univerisy, and Matt Lewis demonstrated how blogging has evolved into an instructional tool, and explored the ways blogging can be employed to facilitate the development of course-based intellectual communities. Take a look at the Pedablogy site (in new window) Rick has used to teach this topic to students and faculty.

Panel Discussion: Web 2.0 Applications and Usage

This session will guided participants through a discussion on specific Web 2.0 applications and how they’re being implemented on various campuses. To see a full list of items discussed download Word document: Panel_Discuss_Web20.doc.

Evaluating Sakai: Preliminary Findings from UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University

Aurora Collado, Instructional Applications Consultant, ITS Teaching and Learning, UNC Chapel Hill, and Jolie Tingen, Instructional Technology Analyst, Wake Forest University provided an overview of a Sakai Pilot Evaluation project. Interactive Instructional Multimedia

Megan Bell, Production and Project Manager, UNC Chapel Hill presented an overview of interactive multimedia products designed at UNC-CH to engage learners and improve student learning outcomes; including XML, flash, animation, and video components. Avenues for Wiki Collaboration

Matt Lewis, Instructional Designer at Elon University, and Rick Palmer demonstrated a wetpaint wiki, a powerful, web collaboration tool. Participants were challenged, through a couple of thought-provoking activities to see how the wiki might be applied for academic purposes. Open Source and Freeware

Jim Murphy, Director, Instructional Design and Development, Elon University, showed participants how freeware and open source software can often take the place of more expensive commercial software. This session will focused on solving the need of purchasing software by choosing the right combination of free and open source packages. The group shared their favorites and compiled a list of the most popular packages. Download the list: Free-Open_List.pptx

Adobe Presenter

Joel Galbraith, an Instructional Analyst from School of Government, UNC, covered projects completed in Adobe Presenter and discussed some of the undocumented “gotchas” and best practices that were discovered. To see Joel's PowerPoint presentation, open Adobe_Presenter_TRI_IT_sp09.pptx
