Who May Apply

Faculty and student affairs professionals from colleges and universities from the US and wordwide are invited to apply for a place in the 20-person seminar; we welcome applications from both individuals and campus teams.

Ideal participants will be dedicated to facilitating undergraduate learning and development, interested (and may be active already) in conducting research to investigate how we can prepare our students to engage fully in democratic thinking, and prepared to work on models of teaching and learning that can be shared broadly with other educators.

Expenses

Seminar participants will be charged a one-time $1000 registration fee. Expenses related to the seminar, including lodging and meals during the seminar’s 2009-2011 summer meetings, will be paid by Elon University. Other participant expenses, including travel and any research costs, will be paid by the participants and/or their home institutions.

Full payment for the seminar ($1,000) is due June 1, 2009.

Participants will be notified of their acceptance

on April 8, 2009.

Seminar Schedule

July 12, 2009

• Participants arrive, with check-in and access

        to rooms from 3-6 pm.

• The kick-off dinner is at 7 pm.

July 13-17, 2009

• Meetings will run full days Monday through Thursday and from 9 am to 12 noon on Friday.

Travel

Plan to arrive on Elon’s campus between 3-6 pm on Sunday, July 12 and to depart Friday, Juy 17 after 12 noon.

Let us know if you will need transportation from the airport.

We recommend using:

RDU - Raleigh Durham Airport, or

GSO - Piedmont Triad Airport in Greensboro.

Greensboro is closer but has fewer flights.  If you will be driving to Elon please let us know in advance so we can arrange for a parking permit.   If flying, plan on flights that depart no earlier than 3 p.m. on Friday the 19th, to give you time to check out and get to either airport.

About the Area

Elon University is in the small town of Elon, North Carolina. The town of Burlington is adjacent and Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh are all within a 1 hour driving radius. 

The weather in the southeast tends to be hot and humid in July, with highs in the 80s and 90s and lows in the 60s.

Accommodations

We have reserved rooms in the Colonnades, Elon’s newest dormitory. You will have an air-conditioned single room with a private bathroom; towels and linens are provided. All buildings on Elon’s campus have wireless internet access. All meals and snacks will be provided (Sunday dinner through Friday lunch). Please let us know of any dietary restrictions. 

You will also have access to the sports facilities at Elon, including fitness center, racquetball courts, pool, tennis courts, & driving range.
