Basic Watershed Information

By definition a watershed is a region in which water drains to a common water source such as a river or lake. All human activity releases waste materials, natural or synthetic, which will flow to nearby water systems ultimately entering the main water source. Unregulated pollutants entering watersheds affect drinking water, recreational activities, and aquatic habitats. North Carolina classifies their watersheds as basins and has drafted basin wide planning strategies to ensure healthy water quality through the state.
