Service-LearningWhat is service-learning? Service-learning is an experience where students can foster a deeper understanding of complex societal issues while they are engaged in service with a community partner. Students who wish to satisfy the Experiential Learning Requirement through service, but not through an academic service-learning course, will develop a customized service experience, with learning outcomes and a minimum of 40 hours of direct service, in collaboration with a community partner. Students will write reflective papers, complete reading assignments, and receive individual consultations from the Kernodle Center staff. What are the eligibility requirements? All students are eligible to participate in service-learning. Some service programs and service trips have an application process. Community partners have their own policies and procedures for accepting volunteers. What are the expectations of service learning? Students must approach the service ELR with the same level of commitment and professionalism they would use to approach a paid work experience, internship or academic course. Students will need to work closely with the community partner to identify a project that meets community needs. Students are expected to dress appropriately for the agency, observe agency policies and follow a regular work schedule. How does service-learning count toward the ELR? Students wanting to get ELR credit for service-learning must meet the following requirements: • Set up an orientation with the Kernodle Center Service-learning, unlike academic service-learning, does not carry academic credit, but it does satisfy the ELR. When all work is completed, the Kernodle Center will send a letter of ELR completion to the Registrar’s Office to note that the ELR has been satisfied. The service-learning ELR will be noted on both the academic transcript and on the Elon Experiences transcript. What are the benefits of service-learning? There are many benefits of service-learning for students. Students may have a meaningful service experience that can change the way they view themselves and the community. Students include their service ELR on their resumes and share their work with potential employers and graduate schools. Many students report that the experience has led them to consider a career in the nonprofit sector and has fostered an interest in continuing to serve their community.
