Teaching and Learning Grants, Travel Grants,

and Scholar Fellowships

Teaching and Learning Grants

The Center’s Teaching and Learning Grants program supports innovative teaching and learning projects. Grants typically range from $1,000 to $5,000, although smaller and larger proposals will be considered. Grants generally support start-up and one-time expenses (materials, stipends, and so on), rather than paying for ongoing operational costs. These grants will not fund a course release.

If you have questions about the application or selection process, or if you would like to see examples of proposals that have been funded by this program, please contact Peter Felten or visit the Center’s web site, www.elon.edu/catl.

We welcome applications from individual full-time teaching faculty and from teams at Elon (the team leader must be full-time teaching faculty). Applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee each fall and spring semester.

Fall applications are due on October 10, before 5:00 p.m.

Spring 2009 applications will be due in early March.

Travel Grants

The Center’s Faculty Travel Grant program supports faculty involvement with the scholarship of teaching and learning, and connects faculty with highly innovative programs in teaching and learning. This program is intended to supplement faculty travel support from other parts of the University, making it possible for more faculty to participate in national and international initiatives on teaching and learning.

For more information, contact Peter Felten. There is no application deadline for this program – requests will be reviewed throughout the year. For more information, contact Peter Felten, pfelten@elon.edu or 278-5100.

CATL Scholar Fellowships

The Center’s Scholars program is to nurture highly innovative teaching and learning. Echoing the Elon Teacher-Scholar statement, the CATL Scholar’s program is designed so that participants both engage deeply with the shared goals of our academic community and develop “the unique gifts” that each individual Scholar possesses.

Each CATL Scholar will be awarded a two-year fellowship. CATL Scholar compensation per year will be a two course teaching reduction (or equivalent compensation if course releases are not possible) and a $2000 faculty development fund to be used to pay for expenses relating to the CATL Scholar’s project.

Typically three new CATL Scholars will be named each academic year.

All full-time teaching faculty at Elon are eligible to apply. We anticipate that most CATL Scholar applications will be from individuals, but teams of faculty are welcome to apply.

2009-2011 CATL Scholar applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m., October 3, 2008. Selections will be made by a faculty committee, and the new cohort will be announced by the middle of October. For more information, contact Peter Felten (x5100, pfelten@elon.edu).
