Being
aware of the various aspects of credit is helpful, but if you already
find yourself facing credit problems, knowing what not to do will not
help you much until you’re back on the right track. Just because you’ve
made a few bad decisions in the past doesn’t mean you’re stuck with a
bleak future, if you act now.
It’s
a good idea to check your credit report every so often. You are allowed
to check your credit report once a year without having the inquiry affect
your credit rating. Each time someone checks your credit score it can
actually hurt you. You can do this online or through several financial
institutions. Checking your credit report is a good idea because it allows
you to see who’s been looking into your credit history and why, as well
as gives you an opportunity to make sure everything on the report, such
as your name, address and Social Security number, are correct. You’ll
also have the chance to make sure everything reported on your score is
accurate. If it isn’t, you can apply to have it (and its damaging affect
on your credit score) removed.
It
may take some time and some effort on your part to repair credit history,
but it can be done. The first place to start is your bank or financial
institution. Often banks will offer refinancing plans that will allow
you to consolidate your debt, making it easier for you to pay. Make sure
you go through a bank or established financial institution. There are
companies who advertise to help with your credit but can charge large
fees and often do more harm than good; avoiding these companies is a good
idea. There are also many non-profit organizations that will help you
find a reliable credit counselor in your area.
In
the end, it’s up to you to repair your credit. You have to be the one
to decide to make responsible decisions and plan ahead. There are groups
out there that can help you, but you have to decide to do this for yourself.
Your future depends on making responsible decisions about your credit,
and knowing when and where to go for help.
