study abroad programs

Almost all of our students and faculty participate in a study abroad program. In Winter 2009 faculty will lead a winter term course on Italy's Classical Heritage in Rome and its environs. In previous years faculty have led course in the the Fine Arts of Italy, Italy's Heritage: Past is Present, and a residential course in Paris, France, "Paris: Capital of Modernity". Elon has also adopted a semester-long residential program in Florence, Italy in concert with the Accademia Europea di Firenze.

Paris: Capital of Modernity (pdf)
For the disciplines of history and art history, the emergence of the modern world is inextricably linked to the city of Paris and its series of political, social, and cultural revolutions in the nineteenth century. This course will challenge students to develop an understanding of the city as the host to key political and social upheavals that transformed the way people look at themselves and the world around them. Students will achieve a truly interdisciplinary vision of Paris as the capital of modernity by not merely seeing the results of the historical transformations in art, but that the art itself changed the ways in which people understood the nature of those transformations.

Italy's Heritage: Past is Present (pdf)
From the quarries that supplied the marble for Michelangelo’s David to the countertops of modern American homes; from celebration of an ancient saint’s martyrdom via loudspeakers; from the grandeur of the Colosseum where Roman “soldiers” pose for your photo . . . Italy’s past lives in its present. Join us as we explore the diversity of Italy’s heritage and the multiples ways that this heritage continues to shape Italian identity. Itinerary highlights may include: The ruins of an ancient synagogue at Ostia, the Forum and Colosseum in Rome, Paestum and Pompeii, a saint’s procession in Spoleto, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, an Umbrian Agritourismo, the Vatican Museums.
