Countless fields are currently using geographic information systems to store, query, analyze, and display geographic data. Though not a new technology, very few people have ever heard of GIS, or if they have, they don't know all that it can be used for. It is a valuable system that cannot only be used to store geographic data, but also to create databases, and construct maps. Though it is used frequently in fields ranging from transportation to business, natural resources management to engineering, there are many people who don't know what GIS is, or only have a very vague knowledge of it. Because of the importance of this technology, this article serves to enlighten others on the basics of GIS and some of its many applications in the world today.
