The creation of Scott
Plaza and Fonville Fountain in 1982 demonstrated the profound impact that
space can have on the experience of community. Especially as
our population increases, it will be important to provide for more intimate
experiences of belonging and to provide opportunities for interaction during
the natural course of daily activities.
Continue to hold Freshmen Convocation and Commencement
exercises "Under the Oaks."
Place two or three benches together 10 feet
off the walkway to provide a zone of privacy for more sustained conversation
among friends or study groups.
Add meditative spaces (Zen gardens, a labyrinth)
for centering and honoring the deeply personal dimension of life - experiences
that are relevant both to individual and to institutional health.
Provide lounges within residence halls and
academic departments to achieve the emotional and intellectual engagement
that creates a sense of belonging.
Provide more on campus housing for juniors
and seniors, and assign students to best meet their developmental needs
from freshman to senior year.
