THE WOMEN'S STUDIES AND GENDER STUDIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE
REPORT TO ACADEMIC COUNCIL, 2002-03 ACADEMIC YEAR

The first goal was to assess and revise the WGS curriculum. The committee surveyed requirements and courses at other colleges and universities; developed a curriculum proposal for a new required course, WGS 300, and a change in the requirements of the minor, both of which were approved by the faculty.  It also petitioned the General Studies Council regarding interdisciplinary courses and General Studies credit; and applied for a grant for WG faculty to develop the new course.

A second goal was to respond to the external reviewer's comments regarding assessment, which was done by developing two new assessment instruments, one performed by faculty and one by students.  Students in the program will also meet on Assessment Day.

Another goal was to increase faculty development; it did so by holding lunchtime discussion.

A continuing goal is to increase awareness of issues related to women's and gender studies on campus with extra or co-curricular activities.  In response, the committee sponsored two speakers, a panel of Elon faculty, a Self-Defense workshop and a student performance.  In response to the continuing goal of building community, it also held a student picnic and end-of-year dinner.
