The main goals of the Teaching Fellows Advisory Committee for the 2002-2003 have been the following:

  1. improve public relations in the Teaching Fellows Program and increase community outreach
  2. provide seminars for Teaching Fellows on issues in education
  3. improve attendance at Teaching Fellows social events
In meeting goal #1, the Teaching Fellows Program sponsored a classroom management seminar on October 9, 2002 which was not only open to senior Teaching Fellows but also to all seniors in methods classes.  We have contacted sponsors of the Alamance/Burlington high school FTA chapters and have made presentations about the state and the Elon Teaching Fellows Program at various schools.  We sponsored Ron Clark, 2000 Disney Teacher of the Year and East Carolina Teaching Fellows alumnus, on March 11, 2003.  The community was invited to hear his presentation.

In meeting goal #2, Dr. Carolyn Stuart, Associate Director of the Teaching Fellows Program, has conducted three seminars for Juniors on important issues in education regarding the teacher shortage and the No Child Left Behind legislation.

We are working on improving attendance at Teaching Fellows events such as the welcome back and socials.  Class chairs have taken a more active leadership role in this area and we will continue working on this issue in our committee meetings.

Our goals for next year are to continue to work on the three goals as stated above as well as to enhance the service component of the Teaching Fellows Program.

Respectfully Submitted,
Janice L. Richardson, Chair
Teaching Fellows Advisory Committee
