CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL PROGRAMS COMMITTEE
The Cultural and Intellectual Programs Committee met seven times during
the 2002-03 academic year.After last year?s committee recommended that
it be dissolved as a standing committee of the faculty, Academic Council
charged our committee to reinvent itself this year and create a new committee
?focused on community life and fostering a rich and invigorating academic
climate.?To meet that goal, the committee took the following actions:
In response, Academic Council recommended at its March meeting that the
work of establishing the new committee be ongoing and that the Cultural
and Intellectual Programs Committee be dissolved.
Reviewed several reports pertaining to academic climate and community including
?Maintaining Community at Elon,? ?Elon University Focus Report on Wholeness
of the Campus,? and reports from the academic summits in 1998 and 1999.
Met with three past or present members of Academic Council?s Academic Climate
and Diversity subcommittee to discuss the subcommittee?s work and to seek
guidance from its members regarding a new standing committee focused on
Wrote a mission statement, which synthesized the committee?s thoughts and
developed a statement of purpose.
Developed proposed membership, duties, and procedures for the new committee.
Submitted a recommendation with proposed faculty by-laws to Academic Council
that a new committee named Committee for Enhancement of Intellectual Climate
replace the Cultural and Intellectual Programs Committee as a standing
committee of the faculty.
