The University Appeals Board is composed of the provost and vice president for academic affairs or his designee, the vice president for student life or his designee, the president of the Student Government Association (SGA) or another executive officer of the SGA, and a faculty member.  The Board heard academic and social honor code appeals from the University Honor Board, social honor code appeals from the Assistant Dean of Students, an appeal from the Physical Therapy department, and athletic-grant-in-aid appeals from the Scholarship Committee.

The Board met seven times since its last report in April of 2002, upholding the decisions of the original honor board or hearing officer in eleven of the twelve appeals heard.  Two of the appeals were academic, eight were social, and two were athletic scholarships.  Sanctions included suspensions, disallowing seniors to participate in commencement exercises, and loss of athletic grant-in-aids.  The Board did revise some sanctions, generally adding the requirements of substance abuse treatment and/or educational sanctions for suspended students to complete as conditions of re-entry into Elon.  In three cases, the length of suspension was modified in lieu of additional sanctions.
